Frequently Asked Questions

  • We currently are offering REVITALIZE! compost and soil blends direct to customer at the Ithaca Farmers Market and from the farm in Danby. Bulk sales are encouraged for a lower price and to eliminate packaging.

You can also find our compost and soil blends at Greenstar Cooperative Market (Cascadilla Street) and Ithaca Agway & True Value, (downtown Fulton location).

  • We offer specific instructions for how to use or incorporate the various soil amendments on each product page. Generally, for established plants, gently work into the soil within the dripline & cover with mulch. For transplants and larger seeds, apply generously at the soil opening before planting. For large or deeply rooted plants, gently work into the soil within the dripline & cover with mulch, or apply as a liquid compost extract. For a video lesson on how to make compost extract, please see our Learn page.

  • We start with a diverse array of local, unsprayed base materials. Each has its own collection of fungi and microbes. Then we mix them and moisten them in a carefully designed recipe...and through the microbial reproduction that happens naturally, the pile heats hot enough (often up to 160°F) and long enough to eliminate pests, pathogens, and weed seeds, but still preserves all the beneficial biology. As it cools to normal temperature, we add some worm compost for more biodiversity. Then we monitor the pile's moisture for about two months. At that point, we do a biological microscope assessment to ensure it's biologically complete compost, ready to inoculate.

  • Yes.. with a couple caveats. Our bags are made from 100% recycled natural kraft paper and lined with a PLA compostable film. PLA (polylactic acid) is a biodegradable, plant-based bioplastic. The bags are locally screenprinted using renewable algae-based inks from Living Ink Technologies. The PLA lining may take a while to break down in home compost, but to us, it is worth keeping it out of the landfill. We recommend using them as mulch and topping with straw or wood chips, but you are always welcome to return them to us as well! We can hot-compost them, which speeds along their biodegradation. NOTE: Please remove the tin tie before composting.

  • We deliberately refrain from screening compost bound for perennial plants to a specific size so that it retains a good variety of aged wood chips. Perennials love fungal soils and the larger chips offer wonderful habitats for a proliferation of beneficial fungi. If you’re looking for a screened compost, take a look at our Vegetables & Flowers blend, or our potting soils.

  • Not at all! Most of the biodiversity in our compost and soil products are either fungal or are invisible to the human eye, but among those you’ll see, the earthworms and red wigglers (Eisenia fetida and relatives) are some of our beloved macroinvertebrates. Worms are amazing purveyors of beneficial soil biology. Each one inherits a rich culture of locally adapted, diverse bacteria, fungi, protozoans and nematodes from their mom, and wherever they go, they leave a trail of this diversity behind them! You’ll also likely see centipedes, millipedes, isopods, and a great diversity of spiders and variously-sized arthropods.. all signs of a complex, dynamic ecosystem.

  • No! These beautiful mushroom manifestations are arising out of the high beneficial fungal diversity in the REVITALIZE compost. These magical life forms often only live for a few hours or days, so enjoy their presence and assurance that the soil is revealing it’s invisible web of life in the root zone of your seedlings!

  • Not currently, but we hope to offer a shipping option by May 1st, 2026.
