WHY A PEAT-FREE SEED STARTER?

Harvesting peat….

  • Releases Greenhouse Gases: Peatlands are the most efficient natural terrestrial carbon sinks, storing more carbon than all the world's forests combined. When bogs are drained and harvested, the stored organic matter is exposed to the air and decomposes rapidly, releasing large quantities of carbon dioxide (CO2) into the atmosphere.

  • Destroys Unique Habitats: Peat bogs are specialized wetland ecosystems that support a diverse range of rare and threatened plants, insects, birds, and animals that cannot survive elsewhere. Harvesting the peat moss destroys this unique habitat, leading to biodiversity loss.

  • Non-Renewable Resource: Peat forms extremely slowly, at a rate of about 1 millimeter per year. The rate of extraction vastly exceeds the rate of regrowth, making it a non-sustainable resource that cannot regenerate within a human lifespan.

  • Impacts Water Management: In their natural state, peat bogs act as giant sponges, absorbing heavy rainfall and filtering water, which helps prevent flooding and maintains water quality. Draining the bogs for extraction compromises these functions, increasing flood risks and polluting water supplies with organic carbon.

CARING FOR YOUR SEED STARTER

Avoid extreme hot or cold temperatures. Water lightly to keep moist (think wrung out sponge). A living soil food web ecosystem needs tender loving care, so it's ideal to purchase what you can use up within a few months.
